Macmillan Cancer Support is the nominated charity for Southwater Event Group.
Our nominated charity is voted for by our staff every two years and we set a fundraising target to ensure we raise as much money as we can through a number of activities and initiatives.
We are heading towards the end of our two year commitment to Macmillan and having exceeded our initial target of £1,000 and having already raised it to £3,000 we have now exceeded this so our final increase is to £5,000! We have really been enjoying raising money for such a fantastic and worthy cause and we were over the moon when Helen Knight, Fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support Shropshire visited us to explain where our funds would be going, spurring us on even more:
‘We are investing large amounts of money this year into Princess Royal Hospital, with a new information unit due to open where people can pick up information and gain advice. We have two new Welfare Rights advisors starting which are helping people with the financial worry after diagnoses. We have also just taken on a new Cancer Nurse Specialist who is qualified in rarer cancers. So your money really does make a difference, without organisations like you we cannot continue this great work.’ – Helen Knight.
With the final push coming up we are determined to go out with a bang, so we are planning a fabulous ball to be held at Holiday Inn on 23rd April 2016 – further details to follow.

Ice bucket challenge
A number of our team from across the Group took on the ice bucket challenge raising £131.39
We have held a couple of coffee mornings across the Group, some which have seen the staff showing off their baking skills and some with a very kind donation of delicious cakes from Brakes raising over £300.
Wolverhampton Half Marathon
Three of our team from Ramada, Emma Cruddas, Niki Hunt and Georgie Cuzick, trained for 6 months to train for the Wolverhampton Half Marathon and raised over £200
Long Mynd Hike
Our CEO Tom Gray and Food and Beverage Director Duncan Rae, both completed the Long Mynd Hike, which is a 50-mile challenge taking in eight summits and which continues through the night, and Duncan used the challenge to raise over £700 for our chosen Charity
Our leisure clubs at Holiday Inn and Ramada held a Triathlon where miles trained on the treadmill, rowing machine and static bikes were clocked up to reach the length of the River Severn. Participants were asked to contribute a sign up fee of £3.50 each. This was open to both staff and members of the leisure clubs to participate in.
This activity raised £153 towards our target.
Our Sports and Social Committee organised a quiz for all of our staff across the group and 7 teams battled it out, but it was the Holiday Inn reservations team, which pipped the others to the post with their excellent general knowledge! Not only did the quiz raise £50 for Macmillan, but the winning team took home a trophy, which their colleagues still haven’t heard the end of.
Jewellery Making Party
Our Sports and Social Committee organised a fantastic evening for the staff across the group, where they were coached by a jewellery making expert! This enabled them to create excellent Christmas gifts or perhaps a little something for themselves, all over mulled wine, raising another £60.
We held a Christmas staff raffle, Christmas jumper day and also we collected at our Christmas parties raising a further £823.10 towards the target.
Revive Cycling Challenge
Revive Leisure Club at Holiday Inn held an F1 themed cycling challenge at Telford Shopping Centre. The aim was to complete 3 laps of each circuit confirmed for the 2015 race calendar, which they succeeded with time to spare. £252.47 was raised from donations of support and also with a chance to enter our raffle. Revive will be donating £1 from every new sign up they receive in January so we will find out this total shortly. To read more about the challenge please click here.
Dunk your Manager
As part of IHG Celebrate Service Week at Holiday Inn, our Managers agreed to brave the outdoors and let the Holiday Inn team throw wet sponges at them in return for a donation to Macmillan. The Managers decided to wear varying forms of fancy dress and I think we can all agree, they were really good sports.
Brave the Shave
Our Kitchen Team Leader at The International Centre, Dave Simmonds, decided to take part in the Macmillan initiative ‘Brave the Shave’, growing his luscious locks for over 4 months before having his head completely shaved in front of the team! Thank you to Alan Stewart, local mobile hairdresser in helping Dave to raise over £400!
